Miss,
Sounds like you and your RV parts buddy can form a new business venture.
With his parts and low prices and your entrepreneurial spirit and labor, you
may be able to become a vintage A/S parts supplier
My guess is the guys who post wants on the VAC list are, or at least were,
serious. The auto salvage industry operates on a pricing strategy of 50% of
new price for good, serviceable parts but that strategy is based on parts
that are still available new. Old, out of stock parts are an entirely
different matter. My guess is the RV salvage industry uses a similar
pricing strategy also ......... assuming accessibility, advertising, etc.
In the case of Atwood he is out of sight and unknown but the prices you
listed today seem to reflect his awareness that there is a market. He seems
to have increased his prices.
I paid $50+ for a rear trunk compartment door and $20 each for a pair of dog
dish hubcaps. I didn't think $100 for your door hinge was bad given that we
had no idea where to find another one and that one came with personalized
installation instructions.
If you want to go through the trouble (and fun) I'd suggest contacting
someone who is advertising a want, tell the individual you have one, be
prepared to provide condition and measurements, and hit him with a price. I
think Del is closer to market value with the prices quoted today if they are
'72 A/S but pretty good if they are '94 A/S. If you have a willing buyer
and can negotiate Del down some or buy a package of several parts, you might
be able to make some money on each plus 10% for boxing and shipping. I
would wait until the buyer's postal money order arrived before shipping.
You'll probably have to measure some parts carefully to make sure the part
will fit the intended application.
Thanks for getting me the wheels and LPG bottle. That is a great buy for
$100!! How much do I owe you? Let me know ASAP and I'll send you a check.
Joy told me in an e-mail tonight he sent your check with an extra amount for
your effort. You may just be able to make a living in the A/S salvage
business.
It's late and I've got to fold some laundry so I can get in my bed. I
studied much of the day in preparation for an exam tonight while doing
laundry.
Love,
Dad
