The "French" side of Africa, the west coast has been in turmoil for years over the resources and borders (diamonds among them). It is not the same as the east side. I had a difficult time on the west side when I was there and no war was going on. The climate (jungles) are also generally on the west side. And generally the east side is peaceful, that is why Wally choose that route.
