         The other thermostat is probably for the original Armstrong A/C- 
IIRC, it has a big round dial to adjust the temperature.

         To replace the Suburban furnace t-stat, you either need a 
mechanical thermostat (NOT a mercury bulb type), or an electronic one. 
White Rogers makes a mechanical unit- the model 7200 with "snap action 
contacts"- this is nearly identical to the Suburban unit (except for 
price). Also- Lux makes a good looking electronic thermostat (available at 
Home Depot) that I am 90% sure would work fine for your furnace- it will 
say works with 12 volt systems. IIRC, they are around $20.
