Robert,
The 50-amp service is 240 volts, the adaptor picks up "half" of this
service for your trailer.
The "higher amps" won't hurt your trailer, think of it as more
"potential". You can't actually use it, but having it won't hurt. It's
sorta like towing a 4000# trailer with a one-ton dually P/U. No, you
don't need that much, but it won't hurt anything having it.
