I also understand that there was a mountain made of methane in Pennsylvania.  Not only did it produice energy but was the local ski run.

In the Sepulveda pass in SoCal exclusive homes were built on top of a former landfill with methane in abundance.  Residents were encouraged not to punch deep holes into  the ground OR pay the stinky price.
