Ok I give up, what is this gizmo I must have ? Jim ?

I really want to paint over it, but I'm afraid the paint won't say on in
the back of the shower. Maybe I'll paint the rest and just close my eyes
in the shower...
Has anyone painted over the interior sheet aluminum of the 1973 era ?
