the 318 engine has
marginal strength for pulling on hills (especially compared to my 440 engine
in my wagon). On the level it is great. Last summer it gave me the best gas
mileage I've ever had towing the trailer (over 12 MPG) ...the nicest, most
comfortable ride too. The engine did not overheat (just got very warm!) but
the transmission did. The fluid was burned when I got home.
If you would change that rear end ratio to a 3.91 to 1, you would take the
pressure off the transmission and also pull a lot of at t good speed. I
have changed the pickups to this ratio and actually improved the gas mileage
with a 318. just returned from pulling a 24 ft gooseneck horse trailer. from
OKC to Lexington KY with a 318 overdrive auto and 3.91 to 1 ratio. Got 14
pulling against a SE wind all the way..
