A roof A/C unit IS OK on pre '62 Airstreams. You just need to do a little
bit of reinforcing to the roof. My '60 Overlander had a rooftop A/C
installed (with reinforcement) back in the early 70's with no ill effects.
There is a "rib" both in front of and behind the unit.
