I've seen an illustration somewhere (maybe in the Airstream owner's manual)
using a bathroom scale to measure tongue weight. A strong board was
supported between a bathroom scale and block of wood the same height as the
scales. The trailer's tongue jack post was placed 3/4 of the way toward the
supporting block away from the scales so the scale is supporting only 1/4 of
the weight of the trailer jack post and the other 3/4 of the weight is
supported by the block. Read the scale and multiply that weight by four to
get the full tongue weight.
The illustration may have used supporting 1/3 the weight by the scales and
multiplying the reading by three to get the full weight, but that's the
idea.
