Whether the original cushions did or did not have wood panel backing doesn't delve
deep enough into
the question. Suggestion: Think in terms of what is under the cushion when a person's
weight is on
the cushion.
1 - If there is a solid piece of plywood built into the trailer and that is what is
underneath the
cushion when people sit on the cushion, then there's no need for another piece of
plywood inside the
upholstery along with the cushion.
2 - If there are three wooden guides (to control the slide out) under the cushion, but
no piece of
plywood for the cushion to rest on, then the cushion will need a wood panel backing.
Otherwise,
anyone sitting on the cushion will sink in between the wooden guides.
Related to the above, if the cushion is positioned on its side when the gaucho is in
the closed
position, then it helps to have a wood panel backing inside the upholstery to maintain
the cushion's
intended shape instead of allowing it to rest on the three (?) wooden guides and
establishing wear
patterns on the upholstery. Sooner or later, the upholstery will wear thin and
eventually tear. At
$10 a yard, you don't need that.
