Bob,

Perhaps the aluminum trim was anodized (and then dyed or painted). Anodized
aluminum is electrochemically formed aluminum oxide - the stuff they make
sandpaper and grinding wheels out of (harder than steel), Rockwell 90 or
thereabouts.
