Normal towing eventually allows the u-bolt to wear through the pipe to the point where it stress cracks and eventually breaks the pipe in two. This trailer had also been modified with a lot of internal modifications that added extra weight which contributed to the failure. It is possible that these are the reasons for discontinuing this design in the early 50's.
