Sounds to me as if the radio and radio antenna are providing a
significant path between the Univolt or battery and ground. The antenna
is grounded to the shell. Burning off the antenna lead didn't come from
heat from the radio, it came from excess current from that significant
path. The ground lead from either the battery or the Univolt is
connected only or mostly to the radio while the other is connected to
the frame and aluminum shell. That's also why it fried the filter
without blowing the fuse. The excess current was in the ground lead, not
the power lead.
