Device naming is a kernel issue, not a (virtual) hardware one.  I've seen
cases where absolutely-guaranteed PATA drives have shown up as /dev/sdX. 
You'd be better off asking dmesg what controller it thinks its talking to,
and determine if your older distribution's kernel is capable of talking to
it.
