[vagrant-up] 'vagrant up' command gives error: Unable to load the EventMachine C extension; To use the pure-ruby reactor, require 'em/pure_ruby' Vagrant failed to initialize at a very early stage:

I am having trouble getting vagrant to run on Mac OSX 10.9.4 . 
when I run 'vagrant up'  I get:


Unable to load the EventMachine C extension; To use the pure-ruby reactor, 
require 'em/pure_ruby'

Vagrant failed to initialize at a very early stage:


I have tried:

- uninstalling/installing vagrant

- gem uninstall eventmachine / gem uninstall eventmachine

Any other suggestions?
