Hello,

The size of the base box is usally big since need to include gcc, make,
kernel devel, headers to be able to compile virtualbox/vmare additions
tools..

if you can live without shared folders over virtualbox/vmware, you may be
able to get a smaller footprint box.

the thing here is how you will move/put data from your host box to the vm ?
if you are on linux/osx, you can use nfs, rsync easily.. if you are on
windows, it will require a bit more work.

So that's the explanation for why base box are big.
