You can define a VAGRANT_HOME and another variable (can't remember offhand) 
that basically changes where Virtualbox stores these. The problem is like 
Alvaro said, Virtualbox (not Vagrant) is really an all or nothing affair, 
whereas VMware Workstation defaults to putting the box next to your 
Vagrantfile.
