You can also use 'lsmod | grep vm' and if it doesn't return the vmhgfs 
module with a count higher than 0 (or it doesn't show up) then Alvaro is 
correct and it hasn't loaded the driver/module correctly. This is 
frequently an issue if you are using newer than 3.13.0-37 of the Linux 
kernel, they made some minor changes there that broke the VMware Tools 
installs horribly.
