So what that tells us is that Nginx through your VM is responsive. The only problem now is figuring out why Nginx is returning a 502 error.
What I would suggest you do is find the Nginx site configuration and replace the configuration with the basic nginx default site page, see http://nginx.org/en/docs/beginners_guide.html and see if it returns a successful page. I believe the problem now is with the pre-existing site configuration (the one you got from the repo).
