Hi Josh:
FWIW, I think i'd like to become adept in gentoo, if only that
it compiles from source, and i do like my sources!
Besides, that means an IBM mainframe can have
the same gentoo as on an i386!
But, I like the idea of keeping things separate, along with their
deps. Putting mysql, or apache, or blender, or whatever in its
own sub-tree under opt keeps / system libs and bin from overbloating.
Manually is really easy, a few env vars, an added line in ld.so.conf
(where is that in deb?) and presto, my servers are isolated, as are
those that may not come with the distro, or be bleeding edge.
I also like having the sourcefiles for those apps i work with closely, i can
move them around machines and know they're built under the same
configurations.
Or, maybe its about finding my comfort level between control and ease
of use.

P.S. Do you have/recommend a current gentoo release?
