Once I get LAMP going, what is the best way to put drupal up?

Whoa, I was just about to install drupal too. It's the new sensation that's sweeping the nation! I would be interested if anyone has any tips about light/minimal installs. I need to RTFM too... ugh.

IIRC, I was able to install on Debian via aptitude; on my employer's webhost, it was available via Fantastico. The install *is* pretty simple, and you can easily turn off modules from the built-in admin interfaces. The challenging part, IMO, is to find the right theme and set of modules to set up your site how you want it. If you don't want it to look like a drupal site, this will probably take some tweaking; however, many of the more recent themes are heavily CSS- based and rather easy to tweak.*

*: and this is what I'm actually working on and will now be getting back to.
