What, specifically, are you looking to get by "attaching" your Linux
machine to the domain? Just "Windows file service", centralized network
authentication for your workstation, or something else? If it's central
auth you're looking for, it's been a few years, but I recall there being
a Samba plugin for PAM that I had working under either FC2 or CentOS
(RHEL) 3.

Right now, I just want to attach an Ubuntu workstation to my Windows 2003
server/Domain as a workstation, so I can print to the shared printer off the
server and access file shares. Ultimately I want to create a member server,
and then Bwahhhaaa, dump the Win2003 server. Unfortunately, I've got several
Windows XP development projects going, as well as a couple of critical
applications (Quickbooks), that still require a Windows presence.

Once upon a time I had everything working pretty well with RH3-9, various
flavors of Fedora, Suse (pre-Novell) when attaching to what was then my NT
server, and I think even a Win 2000 server. I think since 2003 came along, I
may have tried a couple times, but things have changed enough so that I think I
gave up after awhile.

So far, the searches haven't revealed a lot; I'll be posting a query in the
Ubunutu forums. I'm almost at the point where I might just install another
distro and see if have better luck, at least to figure out what the necessary
components are.

Part of my problem is just a natural resistance to Active Directory, which I
have never completely understood....it seems like it is great for a network
with hundreds of attached machines, but it is overkill by several orders of
magnitude for a 5-25 user network. So, when I saw all the stuff about Kerberos,
and PAM, and god knows what, I started to glaze over. I must, however, resist
that behavior, and put on the galoshes and go for it.

Best wishes,
