What are you using for software? Do you consider yourself pretty sophisticated 
with Jack? Even though Jack is used to connect all kinds of audio applications 
sparese, I find the documentation somewhat sparse compared to some  of the 
better open source Audio applications; some of wehich depend on Jack.

I am a guitarist/writer and I use a m-audio delta 1010, gentoo jack, and
museq.  I run it on a amd64 with 3 sata hard drives. one is for the
os/swap, the other two are for recording on and are raid10. great combo!
I also use a roland GP100.
