Not to throw water on the fire, but I still don't fully understand why Ubuntu is so popular or worthy of adoration over so many of the other distros - they all seem to fill different rolls, and it seems like focusing our energy on supporting one distro over supporting Linux in the community in general is perhaps misguided? Ubuntu is certainly good, but for the desktop, is Ubuntu really 100% better than Fedora or Mandriva or SuSE or Lindows or any of the others that target the desktop niche? The times I've tried it, it felt to be a worthy competitor, but not a clear winner. Then again, I don't really feel Linux is a great desktop system for the most part... I only have it as the desktop on my work laptop - and am using Debian SID for that purpose. So, maybe my point of view is just totally tainted and worthless for this discussion... Since the desktop on Linux is so disconnected from the operating system itself, maybe we should be forming KDE or GNOME or other desktop system support groups? <RAMBLE> ON the other hand, since VAGUE is the only ~quite~ active Linux oriented support group in the area, having more is not a bad thing, no matter what. But I like that VAGUE is general - "UNIX" enthusiasts - it doesn't say "LINUX Enthusiasts". I don't know about all of the other VAGUE members, but I use OSX (i.e. BSD) more than Linux. Before that I used IRIX, NeXTStep (i.e. the old OSX), and BeOS (not UNIX, but POSIX which feels close at the shell level) on a very frequent basis. Knowing UNIX as a generic system made moving between systems really very simple when we consider how complex any one system is. Having a support group which is somewhat dedicated to the generic system makes a bunch of sense to me. Ok... so... those are my thoughts. I better stop before I waste all of my time at work rambling like this. </RAMBLE>

I think that Ubuntu needs to offer a scaled down version to compete with Puppy Linux. I have Ubuntu on my home computers but I use Puppy on my flash drive. Also, it is much easier to move files arround with Puppy without worrying about permissions. I see a great opportunity here. Is anybody (Paul) want to put together something, possibly with strong ties to VAGUE. One idea I have is to offer install festivals, software support meetings and Video game LAN party nights, for the people who use Ubuntu. Along with advertising to bring in new people. Does anybody have more, better, or amendments to these ideas? The Ubuntu developer community is huge, so Ubuntu packages for almost every conceivable open source Linux program are available within the GUI.
