Dear Donna,

Mention to your husband John how pleased our entire community is at his MySQL command line prowess... This sort of expertise is the first step down the slippery slope of Linux advocacy.

Note that with the data backed up with no incident you stand a chance of weathering a disaster. However, when the time comes, hopefully never, the restoration process of a MySQL data set can be fraught with complication.

I would like to show you and your intrepid husband how to back up the entire machine, operation system, database, applications and all. There are several good tools for this, I use a combination of partimage and gparted. Again I stress to you, the door of the Barre Open Systems Institute is open to you, and that door is conveniently located close to the Aldridge library, grab that machine and show up any Tuesday or call ahead any other weekday afternoon.

It turned out the animation and game crazed wunderkins who are beating up "blender" were not as interested in learning the fine art of image backup as I would have liked.

The term they used was "boring" ah, to be young again!

Yours in bitterness and regret... :^)

With

Kindest Regards,

Paul Flint

Paul,

Just to let you know John used the mysql dump command to back up the entire database. It put the backup on my desktop and then transferred to a USB drive/burned to CD.
I would like to keep in touch regarding this project.
Thanks so much! Donna

Dear Donna,

My wife goes to work this afternoon, and I could come by later in the afternoon if all goes well.

Please give me a call and we can exchange numbers. I expect this afternoon would be fine.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your prompt response!
The Jericho Town Library is off of Browns Trace Rd. There is a Jericho Center Green and we are 7 Jericho Center Circle. Directly accross the from the Jericho Country Store on Browns Trace. If you let me know when you are available after today I can work out meeting you anytime at your convenience. (The library only has partime hours.)

Thanks again,
Donna

Dear Donna,

Please call me. I really worry you are at a critical stage where the
loss of data could end your project and/or interest in Free Software.

What you need is a copy of "partimage" STAT.

BTW what is the address of the library? I need an address I can drive to.
Are you right off of Brown's Trace Road?

Regards,

Flint

Hello Richard and Paul,

Thanks for responding to the query on the Vague list. As I mentioned
there, Donna Malinowski of the Jericho Town Library contacted me about
some trouble she is having, and I've put her summary below.

Rather than fill up the mailing list, I thought to take the discussion
offline so I put the four of us in this mail.

Donna,

Richard Lawrence and Paul Flint are folks from the Unix group who
responded to the mailing that I cc'd you on. I thought that if folks
saw what you wrote then they might be able to say what could be done.

Jim

                              BACKGROUND

I have been employed by the Jericho Town Library, in Jericho Center,
which has been in operation for 108 years and has only about 6,000
volumes. Basically the library heavily depends on volunteers because the
budget is very tight. We are the last library in Chittenden county to
have a manual card catalog system. The Chittenden County libraries are
checking out a linux based Koha library program. They are looking to
save money by switching from very expensive software such as Follett.
Their vision in the future is to have a system in which patrons can
check out a book on line from any of the libraries in the county, and a
delivery system would drop materials at the patron’s nearest library.
This is already being done in other states i.e. Georgia. The Vermont
Department of Libraries is also very interested in this project and
eventually would like to offer it to all VT libraries.

                               PROBLEM

The assistant library director in Hinesburg at Carpenter Carse Library
is very knowledgeable in Linux. Several libraries have been meeting with
him once a month since November. I am using a donated 500Mhz Compaq
machine. We have installed Linux (Debian) and Koha (open-source
Integrated Library System (ILS) version 2.2
(http://www.koha.org/about-koha/). My son manually has imputed about 400
patrons into the system. However, in March Koha version 3.0 came out,
and we also installed this version. The conversion to transfer patrons
to the new version still has a glitch. In the meantime I do not want to
lose this patron database. I am not quite sure how to back it up since
the machine does not have a CD burner. I found a web site that may be
helpful http://www.kohadocs.org/usersguide/ch07s01.html however it is a
little too challenging for me!

Any help would be appreciated!
