Paul,
At the NPA meeting in Burlington on May 8, Andy gave a really good
presentation on FOSS and Linux. Unfortunately I wasn't able to boot Andy's
Apple computer with my flash drive. So, I wasn't able to demonstrate Puppy
Linux as I had hoped.
We discussed the presentation at the NPA steering committee meeting this
afternoon and Vince, our school board member, said that he thought that we
still need a little more of a push to get FOSS on the agenda for the school
board and the city council. He is especially concerned about security for the
students. Is it possible, using Ubuntu, to prevent the children from
downloading pornography?
Would you be interested in doing a presentation at the NPA meeting on June
12? If so, they will schedule a 20 minute time slot for you. The steering
committee thinks that a resolution should also be presented for a vote,
explicitly urging the school board and city council to consider changing over
from Microsoft to FOSS in order to save the taxpayers money. We should have
done this last month but we ran out of time.
Attendance at the May 8 meeting was lighter than usual but there was one
member of the state legislature there, one city counselor and our one school
board member. Hopefully the attendance will be better at the June 12 meeting
since it is our last NPA meeting for the year. The meetings are always taped
by Channel 17 of Public Access Television in Burlington. Andy's presentation
is available for viewing on their website.
Terry
