My guess is that your default startup is already runlevel 5. X does start
automatically.

I think what you mean is just that you want Gnome to start automatically /
login automatically.

/etc/inittab is for the runlevel. For example, runlevel 5 is a normal
desktop gui and runlevel 1 is system recovery / root mode.

When I get home on my linux box I'll look for that option. It may be under
preferences. I think it's in with with the Window Logon manager sometihng
something.
