This isn't a light alarm, but works well for me. I wrote a simple Perl script which sounds by varying the number and interval of beeps. For example, it may beep once at the set alarm time - pause 7 seconds and beep 3 times - pause 4 seconds and beep 6 times, ...

The beeps aren't at all jarring, but I can't sleep through them as they're irregular.
