I've read that the "right" way is to rename the link in the following way:

- - change "S" to "K" (so it will be called with "stop" instead of "start")
- - change the priority level N to 100-N

Thus, S20scriptname should become K80scriptname.

This will ensure that you actually shut down the service when switching
into that runlevel, in case another runlevel has previously started it.
 (Otherwise, you may find the service running, even though the links
don't indicate that init should start it.)  It also preserves the
priority information: just follow the reverse procedure to get the old
behavior back.
