Perhaps instead of "cranks" you might use the term "pioneers", giving an
image of us as pushing the limits into new and important territory, blazing
a trail that the less adventurous will follow only after it has been deemed
"fully safe".

In terms of a crank, I specifically refereed to myself. Folks who run
Linux exclusively as their only desktop environment tread water in terms
of
many proprietary standards. Indeed this was self-referential and no
disrespect to the community of correspondence we both belong to, nor did
it
intend to objectify any perceived cause (or not :^).
