Out of curiosity/boredom, I ran the numbers on this. Avg cost of using a laser printer is $0.03/page. $0.02 of that is toner, about $0.01 is paper, if you're using the cheap recycled stuff. So a $0.004 per page savings.
So if I value my time at $100/hr and figure it only takes me an hour to download the font, install it on all my various computers, change over to it on all the various documents I might print, etc. Well, it'll take 25,000 pages to recoup my investment and that's about 10 years worth of printing for me personally, both work and home usage combined. A larger organization will definitely use more paper and toner, but I think the expenditure of IT time to convince/argue with Marketing, Accounting, etc. that they should use this font instead of their favorite would quickly outstrip any potential cost savings. Guess I'm just feeling cynical today. I saw a great .sig a while ago that said "Being cynical means you've been paying attention." Anyhow, to continue the 'neat toy' theme of the previous post, Xerox was/is working on an erasable paper for printouts that only needed to last a day or so, allowing the sheet of paper to be reused and printed multiple times. http://www.xerox.com/innovation/news-stories/erasable-paper/enus.html Rene Tom Kastner wrote:
Here's a font that can save 20% of your ink usage. Has anyone tried it? http://www.ecofont.eu/ecofont_en.html
