Dear Richard,

If you are really into experimenting, get a girlfriend, preferably one with a Macintosh. This way you get to check out BSD as well additional hardware and/or software features that might be accessible in this situation...

My only additional guidance was suggested to me by my dear old dad, and I pass this vital advice on to you:

"Never bring hard liquor or Automatic Data Processing equipment
   into the bedroom"

Mostly, have fun!

Regards,

Flint

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has relatively recent experience using both
Debian (or some derivative) and FreeBSD, and if they might like to
give me some thoughts on the relative merits of each. I'm not looking
to start a holy war here -- just looking for an informed opinion. I
have used Debian and derivatives since I came to the free software
world, but I have never used any of the BSDs
Richard, aside from the typical small differences in directory structure
conventions the biggest change with FreeBSD is that you use the ports
facility to manage packages instead of apt. As a general rule ports are
built from source when you install them so you don't end up in
dependency hell.

FreeBSD has a long history of being one of the most
secure-out-of-the-box UNIX/Linux systems available and for that reason
alone I believe that it is worth gaining some experience with it.
