I (think) I have to disagree; I'm not positive I know exactly what you
mean by "outside web-based," but
- Outlook can use Zimbra as a full-fledged back-end.
- Mozilla is close to releasing Lightning (beta 1 just went live), and
this is also a full-fledged mail/calendar client. I have to imagine
that it would be trivial for VMWare to put hooks in to leverage it.
- The much-maligned Evolution -- which has also been ported to Windows --
can act as a drop-in-place replacement for Outlook.

Bottom line is that there's no reason I can see to not think of VMWare's
move as a "Exchange killer" motivated. Do I think it'll *happen*? That's
a fish of another color. But Lord knows there's bad blood between VMWare
and MS (though perhaps less bad blood between EMC and MS), so it wouldn't
surprise me to see them give it a go.
