Greetings List Lurkers,
Welcome to your official notice of the Barre Open Systems Institute (BOSI)
Adult Swim. The swim stars at 5:00 PM), when we shall continue the business
pleasure and pain of dealing with the all manner of technology, with an
emphasis on open source stuff, and particular emphasis on the Arduino.
Speaking of pleasure and pain, do not miss(no pun intended :^) the movie
"Hysteria" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1435513/). It is a fine instance
of how technology can be a great boon to mankind in the collective
sense...
The Arduino continues to be the captivating bit of
open source hardware and software. We have essentially tossed the Open
Wire File system approach to the Dalla 1-wire sensors out in favor of the
Chris Yarger method with the Arduino. The "tsp" site has been updated:
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp and will be containing more pictures as
the project goes forward. I may ask Chris to do a presentation on this
system at the Maker Fair in Burlington if I can get that organized.
I reiterate that the fact that this is backed by no less than Tandy/Radio
Shack (Company motto: "These here twin towers in Fort Worth are paid
for..." :^) matters a great deal. Again, the pellet furnace, and
temperature monitoring projects all seem to converge around this Amtel
chip set.
Other ongoing, or maybe not so ongoing... projects that tend to gather
here (or gather dust) include:
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/arduino - moving in the arduino groove
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/javajive - to get better at Javascript
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp - Temprature Senors Project
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/furmon - Furnace Monitoring
On the subject of the $200.00 worth of batteries required for the base of
the snowba, you arleady know that A "snowba" is a rumba with a snowblower,
I am going to continue to bet on global warming for now. As we mentioned
before, w have a parted out hi-quad
wheelchair with the kind of linear actuators that might do the trick.
What would be lovely is for a well-healed patron to realize the research
potential of the Barre Open Systems Institute and become a patron. This
benificence could start with the $200.00 for batteries, some MOS or IG
FETS, and a snowblower, one with internal caterpillar drive...
...ah, for a well healed sponsor!
Otherwise Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source
Software meeting. We have made some small progress on our internal
infrastructure, but remember - it is an analog world.
That said, continue to find our grubby mitts on the Dallas Semi "1-wire"
temperature probes, and the Arduino is clearly the coolest thing all year.
Note well that the Barre library stocks "Linux World", the DVD are available as
well. Don't reveal your source, I think I have some fines overdue...
Anyway, come and do open source stuff. For more information about the BOSI
Adult Swim meeting time and location try this:

Show up at the the Hedding United Methodist Church Basement if you have
questions or are interested in Linux or the concept of free and open systems,
The basement of the Hedding UMC facility is actually working out pretty well.
If you wish to be included on the "Linux_adult_swim" mailing list, send a
response to this note. Note that the mailing list system is a bit peevish
right now. Let me know if you have any difficulties.
Kindest Regards,
Paul Flint
