Greetings List Lurkers,
Welcome to your official notice of the Barre Open Systems Institute (BOSI)
Adult Swim. The swim stars at 5:00 PM), when we shall continue to ply the
chaos of dealing with the all manner of technology, with
an emphasis on open source stuff... The problem today will be how to
contain inspiration.
While the Arduino continues to be the captivating bit of open source
hardware and software, we expect to present at the Maker Faire later this
month the Dallas 1-wire sensors configured in using the Chris Yarger method
and our flashy new hardware enclosure method showcasing the Arduino.
While "tsp" site has been updated: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp and
contains more pictures and will have pictures of the enclosure soon.
Chris and I will throw together a presentation on this system at the Maker
Fair in Burlington (http://www.champlainmakerfaire.com/) on September
29th. Again, the pellet furnace, and temperature monitoring projects all
seem to converge around this Amtel chip set.
But the inspiration came this weekend. I was in one of "those meetings"
that life forces to attend every now and then. Anyway I was half paying
attention and talking to Terri, their "parlementarian", and a thought hit
me like a freight train...
How hard could it be to use an application to track the process of the
meeting, especially when the application needs only to track the meeting
in the rather constrained context of "Roberts Rules of Order"?
Wait for it...
The new project is located here:
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/robotsrules
Can you imagine how much of an impact you would have if you could write an
application to keep track of motions, count calls for division, remember
who seconded what, the silly thing could optionally record the whole
meeting. The output of this would be three things:
1. A very nice meeting minutes
2. Optional recording of the meeting.
3. Absolute World Domination to whoever got this running first.
I looked around on the web briefly and this might even be an original.
If anyone can find a project working on this I would be happy to use that.
....so much for inspiration...
Other ongoing, or maybe not so ongoing... projects, but again not as cool
as the new one include:
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/arduino - moving in the arduino groove
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/javajive - to get better at Javascript
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp - Temperature Sensors Project
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/furmon - Furnace Monitoring
The snowba money pit...
On the subject of the snowba, I need to find the manual on the electric
wheelchair this is based upon. There appears to be a hack waiting to
happen if I can get information about the chair's original controller.
Wish me luck or point me in a good direction, but thanks existentially in
any event. Stack that up against the well-healed patron who realizes the
research potential of the Barre Open Systems Institute and cut us a large
check.
...ah, for a well healed sponsor!
Otherwise Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source
Software meeting. That said, we continue to find our grubby mitts on the
Dallas Semi "1-wire" temperature probes, and the Arduino, clearly the
coolest thing all year, the electric wheel-chair and more old computers
than you can imagine...
Do not forget that the Barre library stocks "Linux World", the DVD are
soon to be available. Don't reveal your source, I think I have some fines
overdue...
Anyway, come and do open source stuff. For more information about the BOSI
Adult Swim meeting time and location try this:

Show up at the the Hedding United Methodist Church Basement if you have
questions or are interested in Linux or the concept of free and open systems,
The basement of the Hedding UMC facility is actually working out pretty well.
If you wish to be included on the "Linux_adult_swim" mailing list, send a
response to this note. Note that the mailing list system is a bit peevish
right now. Let me know if you have any difficulties. Note that I will be
updating the list-server by next week.
Kindest Regards,
