Greetings List Lurkers,

Welcome to your storm warning NOAA-official notice of the Barre Open Systems Institute (BOSI) Adult Swim. The swim stars at 5:00 PM, and we shall continue to loll around and try to fix various technical conundrums until 7:00 PM EST or until the basement fills with water and we are forced to swim for our lives... Is it that is our society is in some kind of trouble, or have we simply turned this planet into some type of malevolent putty-ball Sterling heat engine, that said we shall attempt to find the truth of technology as the answer my friend comes "blowin' in the wind", bolstered by the absolute faith and knowledge that the open source stuff is really the only path to serenity.

Many of you lucky correspondents to this note may receive it twice, proving that any job worth doing is worth doing twice... The issue is that the flint.com domain where all the claptrap comes from is in the process of change. With any luck we will not be absorbed by the Great Goggle and it's haughty slattern, Plus, but hey, those folks know to code handle bar mustaches...

Again, a desirable side effect of this new world order may be actually getting the appropriate web sites up and working a bit better, and the new look on http://www.bosivt.org is an example of what happens when you give a copy of Plone to those that deserve it, such as good Master Christopher, but hey, he is currently on leave from is position of Vice (ahem) at BOSI. Additionally if it were not for the upcoming inclemency (e.g. Sandy the Storm) we would all be convening and already have our snouts covered in delicious pizza supplied by none other than Rubin RBT by no less than Rubin hisself, and we intend to get very organized and respond, yea, that's it... get organized. Rubin Bennett Technologies is one of the finer firms in the Washington County area that can and does specialize in Open Source so we will collaborate in order to that we can carry their information (Atta boy, Rubin:^). While I saw his wife and beautiful daughter picking up food over the weekend the Rubin himself has hot posted.

With the weather changing, the furmon is very much in play, we have a humidity feature, but it really looks like we need an anemometer. While this weekend we were hoping to get the data off the pellet furnace... and attack the data with Python, Stuff it into MRTG, make it into SNMP MIBS, instead we put in the heat pump for the master bedroom.

Well at least I got something done...

The "tsp" site has been updated: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp and contains more pictures and we have have pictures of the enclosure now as well as snippets of miniterm and how you can remotely sample data. That said, we need to get back to thinking about all the other projects, Javascript, the snowbot and Robots Rules.

We are also working on another Arduino alarm thingy. More as this develops. Any other ongoing, or maybe not so ongoing... projects, but again not as cool as the furmon progress include:

http://docbox.flint.com:8081/arduino - moving in the arduino groove
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/javajive - to get better at Javascript
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp - Temperature Sensors Project
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/robotsrules - The quest for Roberts Rules of Order

On Robots Rules, we responded to the professor at Evergreen College, and he has resounded back, maybe we can beta site or something.

Otherwise, Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source Software meeting and general hacksterism. That said, we must acquire more of the Dallas Semi "1-wire" temperature probes, and we just got another the Arduino, with two ethernet shields. The shield TCP/IP stack is apparently done in around 10K. We live in an age for miracles, this remains the coolest thing all year. If invited, we can and will bring the electric wheel-chair we have found a good hack point in the controller card assembly, a connector the same shape and size as an old floppy...

Do not forget that the Barre library stocks "Linux World", the DVD are soon to be available. Don't reveal your source, as I think I have some fines overdue...

Anyway, come and do open source stuff. For more information about the BOSI Adult Swim meeting time and location try this:

Show up at the the Hedding United Methodist Church Basement if you have questions or are interested in Linux or the concept of free and open systems, The basement of the Hedding UMC facility is actually working out pretty well.

If you wish to be included on the "Linux_adult_swim" mailing list, send a response to this note. Note that the mailing list system is a bit peevish right now. Let me know if you have any difficulties. Note that I will be updating the list-server by next week.

Kindest Regards,
