Greetings List Lurkers,
This is the official notice of the Barre Open Systems Institute (BOSI) Adult
Swim. The swim stars at 5:00 PM EST, our latest vanity being to include a
goggle hangout https://www.google.com/calendar/render?pli=1 until 7:00 PM EST.
The big news is that the BOSI vice president, Mr. Chris Yarger will be
instructing us on how to use the Google Stream Video product so that we
can retain the chaos and play it back over and over...
Almost got the Hot Water bypass wired up to the Pellet Furnace. Tried to
use the internal 24 Volt supply, but after a while I smelled something
burning besides pellets. Somehow I avoided doing in the system power
supply, but that was all the excitement I could take today. Gonna mend my
ways and use an external supply, and the existing N.O form "C" alarm
closure and call it a day. when this is wired to the system, the
changeover contactor switch-gear allows one to flip the water heater to
electric whenever we get a hard alarm from the pellet furnace. BTW this does
not happen often if you keep the silly thing clean, but fact is I may be a bit
of a slob...so we need this backup mechanism. Completing this bypass for the
water-heater pellet furnace allows that if the furnace goes into alarm mode, it
throws a contactor and we heat morning shower water with (gasp) electricity.
Yea, it is expensive, but a better alternative than a cold shower on a work
day. The switch hardware is actually elegant, the final part is getting a
proper NEMA plug/socket set for 220V. May be redoing the plug side this
week.
This weeks triumph of engineering was to get the Snowbot across a Rubicon.
Chris helped with this, and the plan now is to somehow cascade Arduino
motor control shield H-bridges to the Big Ass FETS (BAFs) that run the two
control motors. The idea here is you can graduate from a toy car to a
robot and not change a thing. Anybody got any ideas about how to cascade
H-bridges?
Went and heard Bill McGibben talk, he autographed his book "Eaarth". The
'graph reads "To the future Vamps and FEZs. the best of luck -Bill" It
appears that according to bill we will leave our children a planet fit for
Vampires and Flesh Eating Zombies (FEZs). If you knew my kids you would
be comfortable with this (at least they are not lawyers!).
The furmon is working but I need to rewrite the Arduino output for a bit more
sanity. Todays activates at the Swim are gonna involve checking out the
donated hardware we just acquired and working the Methodist sound
equipments. Making the world safe for Ubuntu or Methodists is not for
the faint of heart.
Chris has the idea of using the Rasberry Pi as a server for old laptops
without the power to PXI boot to. This may be a very cool idea.
The "tsp" site has been updated: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp and we expect
to get more pictures and we have have pictures of the enclosure now as well as
snippets of mini-term and how you can remotely sample data. That said, we would
have gotten back to thinking about all the other projects, Javascript, the
snowbot and Robots Rules. We are making no progress...(damn you Netflix!)
The ever growing list of projects includes:
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/arduino - moving in the arduino groove
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/javajive - to get better at Javascript
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp - Temperature Sensors Project
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/robotsrules - The quest for Roberts Rules -
http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash - Yea, I am not kidding...
Otherwise, Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source
Software meeting and general hucksterism. That said, we expect to acquire more
of the Dallas Semi "1-wire" temperature probes, and we just got another the
Arduino, with two ethernet shields. The shield TCP/IP stack is apparently done
in around 10K. We live in an age for miracles, this remains the coolest thing
all year. This all fits neatly in the magic plastic wire-mold box...
Do not forget that the Barre library stocks "Linux World", the DVD are soon to
be available, I just made isos of each and every one. Don't reveal your
source, as I think I have some fines overdue...
Anyway, come and do open source stuff. For more information about the BOSI
Adult Swim meeting time and location try this:

But the key appears broke. More stuff to fix, and still not fixed.
Show up at the the Hedding United Methodist Church Basement if you have
questions or are interested in Linux or the concept of free and open systems,
The basement of the Hedding UMC facility is actually working out pretty well.
If you wish to be included on the "Linux_adult_swim" mailing list, send a
response to this note. Note that the mailing list system is a bit peevish
right now. Let me know if you have any difficulties. Note that I will be
updating the list-server by next week.
Kindest Regards,
