If you can modify what is presented there, maybe you can go at it from
another angle. 

Are you mounting a shared drive with the same credentials for everyone? If
so, maybe a saved bookmark or even mounting the folder automatically at
startup.

If it is separate share with different credentials for each user how about
writing a script that prompts for username/pwd and pointing to that via an
icon on the menu bar.

Yes, it does appear a bit unlikely that we can make the changes desired.
However, I'm not looking at changing the sidebar, but a window that comes up
from an item in the Places menu, so I'll cling to hope that someone might
have a solution.
