Greetings List Lurkers,
So, this is the official notice of the Barre Open Systems Institute (BOSI)
Adult Swim. The swim stars at 5:00 PM EST, our continued vanity being to
include a goggle hangout https://www.google.com/calendar/render?pli=1 from 5:00
till 6:00 PM EST.
The result of the big push was a very successful showing at the Shelburne
Farms Champlain Mini Maker Fair. The BOSI participation in the Champlain
Mini Marker Fair appeared to be a triumph. Our approach was four pronged:
1. Snobot,
2. Strembot,
3. Battery Box Construction and finally
4. Robots Rules
The Snobot (see list below) brought the crowd in, and we then showed them
the Streambot (now renamed strembot) and if they were very ecology minded
showed off the proper way to put a battery array in your barn. Otherwise
we showed them the work-in-progress which is Robots Rules.
As a matter of fact everything was a work-in-progress. The damn snobot
soaked up most of the time we had to prep, and it was not till the last
moment that we realized that we needed to have a stream gauge type device
as that was what we had agreed to do.
So the big push in the waning hours of the week was to get ready a
"streambot" for the Champlain Mini Marker Fair ready for the morning of
Saturday September 28th. I had forgotten till Wednesday that a stream
gauge was the device we had been invited to participate with, and so
needed to invent a project that has a coherent look and feel.
Thank goodness we were next to the Sparkfun Booth. Dave there on Saturday
morning hands me the answer to the problem of a level transducer. It fell
from his hands like manna into the hands of the nation of Israel (me).
Ironically the result of the fair is that all of the projects did move
forward quite a bit. Who knew that there was a great level transducer
available? Who knew that it worked? Who knew that it would be handed to
us by Dave from Sparkfun? Was it a sensation? For me it was... It appears
we can actually build the strembot system!
The basic idea for the Shelburne Mini-Maker Fair is do some more with the
concepts of Do It Yourself (DIY) energy and ecology measurement. This was
supposed to be the overarching project for the month. This type of
Arduino and Raspberry Pi fired creativity was in evidence everywhere. The
robots alone were scrambling over each other like bizzare insects being
chased by little children. Excellent Chaos!
I really want to thank the Vaguers who stopped by the booth and indicated
that they actually read these emails (the chronicles of ridiculous :^)
Stream Gauges started at our concept level for the event, and after the
first hour they became a real prospect.
This was very good.
In light or our ongoing efforts to portray Barre as an Open Source Mecca, Bit
Ed Hutchinson, Hurricane Jeannie, Kris and Dave the Geek assisted and
keeps us talking to the in a common positive
voice, when not trying to give the snobot direction.
We need to continue to preach on the topic of Open Source generally and
particularly SNMP for both sink and source energy information transport,
we used our booth in an open way so that people could come in, sit down,
see the stuff we have been doing and hopefully help us get the DIY stuff
we are doing done.
This afternoon we are expecting more lively G+ with Cole and Yarger from
down south. I am very interested in the DIY mobile that Google has going
with Motorola. I want it in Barre. More on this later.
The ever growing list of projects includes:
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/snobot - jesum they love this robot
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/furmon - monitor that pellet furnace
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/arduino - moving in the arduino groove
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/javajive - to get better at Javascript
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp - Temperature Sensors Project
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/robotsrules - The quest for Roberts Rules - - -
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash - Yea, I am not kidding...
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/mrtg - remedial raw mrtg for the slow...
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/raspberry - all rPi'ness
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/streambot - like I needed another project.
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/organized - oh please let me be organized!
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/music - this may be the least organized
site ever!
Otherwise, Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source
Software meeting and general system rejuvenation. That said, we expect to
assemble more of the Robots Rules modules, the Dallas Semi "1-wire" temperature
probes, the snobot and the streambot, and we have two Arduinos, with lots of
fixin's as well as several Raspberry Pi's a boat load of radio modules, and an
embarrassment of riches in terms of books. Keep in mind the O'Reilly class
books are still available if anybody wants any...
Do not forget that the Barre library stocks "Linux World", and the latest issue
is on the shelf. The DVD's are available to checkout and copy, we intend to
continue provide copies and isos of each and every one.
The bad news is that I have not yet gotten to the Barry Library and in order to
read the latest issue of Linux World. The magazine is chocked full of good
ideas,
Needless to say the Arduino remains the coolest thing for 2012, the Raspberry
Pi the coolest thing so far for 2013, and Ras-BMC the coolest thing for the
month of April, xBMC for May, PiFm the coolest thing for June. Solarfest was
the coolest thing in July, and maybe the Maker Fair will be cool for September.
August was too chaotic to have a cool thing I suppose.
Anyway, come and do open source stuff. For more information about the BOSI
Adult Swim meeting time and location try this:

Show up at the the Hedding United Methodist Church Basement if you have
questions or are interested in Linux or the concept of free and open systems,
The basement of the Hedding UMC facility is actually working out pretty well.
If you wish to be included on the "Linux_adult_swim" mailing list, send a
response to this note. Note that the mailing list system is a bit peevish
right now. Let me know if you have any difficulties.
