Greetings List Lurkers,
The Monday morning syndrome is alive and well. I spent the weekend with a
client who uses Charter cable to feed his business net. After a "power
hit", the modem, which was hooked to a copy of IP Cop, suddenly would not
work, it would DHCP to the 192.168.100.x internal maintenance network of
the modem but it refused to DHCP to the 64.114.5x.x network that is the
Charter main backbone...
So I go over to the good offices of Charter in Barre and Bonnie gives me a
new modem (important point Charter will not allow "gamer" routers on
their network). So I come home, take the cable off the back of my TV,
plug in the new Charter modem, set my house system to ping uvm.edu (how
very short) plug it in and the modem takes off...
The ping on the house system stops. I still cannot DHCP into the new
Charter Modem. I disconnect the new modem put the antenna line back on
the TV and still no ping on the house system. So I go down and reboot the
Charter house modem, no ping... I reboot the PFSense Firewall... It
cannot see out through my old faithful modem.
Is there a modem virus? Or is it that Charter has determined that using
Linux (or BSD) firewalls is bad for business...
Anyway if there are other reports of difficulty or if we figure it out I
will print the rest of the story right here.
Anyway as I have stated before, summer is here and the Pizza shall be warm by
5PM. For more information about how to get to the BOSI Adult Swim try:
http://bosivt.org/directions Kevin Cole will G+ in 5-6 PM if all works out.
Chris Yarger will be in the house again maybe, his new gig sometimes keeps him
late. We need to help Big John get the kiosk project out the door. That, and
fix a bunch more laptops, is what we need to do at today's meeting,
Besides the current connectivity crisis, our continued major objective is
to continue to try to figure out how to invest the time and resources to
turn the Barre Open Systems Institute into more than just the Adult Swim
technical clinic and more into a real learning facility. Thankfully we
have input both from several sources on this topic. Anybody willing to
actively get involved here is blessed. We have had some interest from the
folks at Norwich, the Young Hackers Academy in Montpelier, and the
Greenfield Tech Scouts, but actual structure seems still pretty far away.
So, this is the official notice of the Barre Open Systems Institute (BOSI)
Adult Swim. The swim stars at 5:00 PM EST, our continuing vanity being to
include a goggle hangout https://www.google.com/calendar/render?pli=1
until 6:00 PM EST.
As I cannot say too damn often, The meeting is at 40 Washington Street, Barre,
VT 05641, USA http://bosivt.org/directions
The BOSI Adult Swim is essentially about helping out fellow users of open
source products in a clinic environment. Despite my very best of
intentions, the Adult Swim is really almost a perpetual Linux
install-fest, and only secondarily a learning environment, not to say that
We are actually doing some cool stuff with Zenity and bash scripts...
Once again, the goal of the meeting shall be as usual, to get organized
and try to get the various projects moving forward.
The ever growing list of projects (now on our web site :^) includes:
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/nodejs - ok, it is on the list.
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/snobot - jesum they love this robot
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/furmon - monitor that pellet furnace
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/arduino - moving in the arduino groove
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/javajive - to get better at Javascript
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/tsp - Temperature Sensors Project
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/robotsrules - The quest for Roberts Rules -
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash - Yea, I am not kidding...
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/mrtg - remedial raw mrtg for the slow...
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/raspberry - all rPi'ness
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/strembot.org - maybe a very cool project.
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/organized - oh please let me be organized!
- http://docbox.flint.com:8081/music - this may be the least organized
site ever!
Otherwise, Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source
Software meeting and general system rejuvenation. Expect to be remotely
preached at on the various topics of Open Source and how I am confident it
shall cure all the evils and ills of this wicked world. In a perfect meeting,
people would come in, sit down, see the stuff we have been doing and hopefully
help us get the DIY stuff we are doing done, or maybe just fix a laptop.
So, do not forget that the Barre library stocks "Linux World", and the latest
issue is on the shelf, and it is good. The DVD's are available to checkout and
copy, we shall to continue provide copies and isos of each and every one.
Anyway, come and do open source stuff. For more information about the BOSI
Adult Swim meeting time and location try this:

Show up at the the Hedding United Methodist Church Basement if you have
questions or are interested in Linux or the concept of free and open
systems, The basement of the Hedding UMC facility is actually working out
pretty well.
