Greetings List Lurkers,
First a couple of rants about our slide into Fascism:
1. Where did all the park benches go in Barre City?
When Barre City spent a ga-zillion dollars renovating main street they
included areas with park benches in them. Typically these ended up on the
"islands" formed by the beginning and end of the intended parking areas.
Then wife and I went walking last week, and all the park benches were
gone. Where there was a bench in front of the old Dunkin Donuts, another
separate tale of Urban Horror, the park bench was mysteriously replaced
with chains linking granite bollards, someone's trademark.
2. "No Trespassing" signs on the Barre City Bicycle path.
So the wife and I go to walk to McDonalds in South Barre Town. The
obvious way is along the bicycle path that connects at Prospect Street.
So we get on the path and on both sides there are Posted "No Trespassing"
signs. Keep in mind that this is in a city owned public park area.
Have I misunderstood the meaning of the words "public parks"?
I see all this as persecution of the pedestrian, and I am a pedestrian.
The short answer is that we are still here and the meeting will take place
today at 17:00.
GEEK CHRISTMAS PARTY
On a more joyous note, depending on the location of #1Son & Co., we are
going to have a Christmas Party over at Casa Flint. The options are:
1. Monday December 18th, starting at HUMC and finishing at Casa Flint or
2. Sunday December 17th
3. Friday December 22nd
In any case once we establish the date, the party is also an "open house"
to the Aldrich library staff, particularly Gail and Sara (en famili). So I
got a lot of invitin' and explainen' to do. But I believe we need a
Christmas Party.
KINDLE LIBERATION FRONT
We have recently received two of the Kindle Fire "7" tablets, and our only
issue is that we are terrified to turn them on as the first thing they
want to do is to update themselves.
We need to Kindlemeister himself to help us to get these puppies hacked!
Hopefully Joe will show us the way at this meeting...
3DPRINT
I am still being tormented by the world of 3D. As I mentioned, there are two
paths of torture:
1. 3DPrint and
2. 3DCNC
In 3DCNC I am currently stuck. This has to do with getting
visual bash control of the 3DCNC control hardware. This has
everything to do with my understanding of just how the control
language works. Until this is accomplished calibration of the table
surface is but a dream.
On the 3DPrint side, I am gonna have to call in Consultants. They will
show up as Christmas presence...
TADA
We are gonna try this again this week.
Jitsi actually may be working, but really is not a solution. For instance,
Joe Hart, needs to compile a new version of firefox to get things working
on his end. Just like last week, in order to accommodate this we will be
Google Plus at the beginning of the meeting and jitsi towards the end.
Brother Kevin Cole came back from Oslo with a clear case of the Jitsi's, and
for the last two meeting we drank the jitsi cool-aid. So this meeting just
like last week, we are going to switch over in mid-meeting it from goggle
hangouts. Seems like all we can do at this time.

This is what we are intending to once again use Google Plus for the first part
of Teleconferencing At Da AdultSwim (TADA) which starts today at 5 PM EST
today, and follow this at 6PM with Jitsi. We are trying to keep a fair number
of remote folks happy including, Effin in San Francisco, Kevin Cole in DC,
Brett in the South and Joseph Hart at Niagara Falls What we can do? Getting a
solution that meets BOSI needs is becoming an interesting issue. We seek a
solution.
So today just like last week, we start with Google Plus then at 6PM we continue

SPLUNK CLASS
The goal today is to put all the weather data from the TSP system on the
Splunk server, assuming it has not timed out.
In the attempt to getting around to playing with Splunk, we may have gone over
the 30 day evaluation limit. Thus we need to get registered as a non profit
with "splunk sentral", which is why we really like open source.
I remain confident that Los Weasel will actually support this project by such
good acts as sending me the URL I need to fill out for this program offered by
Splunk. Who knows he may actually try jitsi!!!!
VISUAL BASH
Half the fun of Visual Bash is attempting to get Wikipedia to recognize
it. Here is where we stand:

Say what you want but spell it correctly... As you may surmise, I have been
trying to develop and popularize the VisualBash framework, and it actuall works
for me.
As you can see, I have tried in vain to get an article posted about
VisualBash on Wikipedia, but do not seem to have the "psudeo-savvy"
necessary to satisfy their editors. So I need help. Any of you who can,
write about VisualBash either on Wikipedia or other blogs, I would very
much appreciate it. Any way I am trying again using their dreaded
"article wizard"... God I hate wizards.
TECHNORUBBLE
Technorubble has been quiet, which may change next week.
The only development is that the Amature Radio folks have shown some interest
in this area. I am encouraging this.

Terry from Yourduino(http://yourduino.com) dropped off a lot of very cool
TechnoRubble, that we are gonna go through at the meeting tonight,

had some good feedback about this issue. As the winter arrives I intend to
tackle this, using the framework developed in the Trantor project. It will be
a mid-winter projecet I suspect. This needs to be reflected in the "unlikely
candidate for software development" category above.
I had talked to Nick Floersch and the gang at the Code for America Vermont
brigade. Code For America Burlington appears to be Slack based, and I clearly
am not. The idea is to make TechnoRubble much more network centric (after all
what created most of the technorubble?) maybe get people to mail their
TechnoRubble to us in a USPS Flat Rate Box. Get TechnoRubbble available on
Amazon or Ebay! Not high priority, but could change...
Additional news is that we have the worlds cheapest RFID system arduing
card, and 101 RFID cards. Apparently this RFID card also works on the
Raspberry Pi (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/raspberry#PiRFID). We have a
long way to go here...
LAKECRAFT PI
As you recall, Nick of Code for BTV developed "Lakecraft"
(http://www.lakecraft.net/) which is a terrarian of the Champlaign Lake that
can be used on an intel Minecraft version. We now know that Minecraft is
default loaded on Raspberry Pies... Wonder if there is data set
compatibility...
Wierdly enough, Deyo our new hulk, plays this game like a violin, and
demonstrated a whole lot about running it on the pie. There is a glimmer of
hope here.
TRANTOR LLDD
The Trantor Project designed to be a Linux based operating system resource
(http://docbox.flint.com:8081/trantor) languishes. As you My know, LLDD stands
for Local "Library Digital Destinations", and is the real important part of
this project that remains undone. As of now the system is once again 100%
operational after Sam performed a "security evaluation", on the physical
hardware at the library.
I have an ongoing conversation about this with Sarah, the Aldrich Library
director, as I am most interested in her help with both the trantor project and
Library-based TechnoRubble. Maybe we can find out what is up here...
Sarah the librarian indicated that there is new management (Scott Murphy) at
the State Library level and that they are hiring a technical coordinator who
can address Local Library Digital Destinations (LLDD), but this has not yet
happened.
Sarah also still wants a press release. I hope that the concept of Local
Library Digital Destinations has not been completely wiped out by entrenched
powers would so much prefer that to raise revenue by concentrating everything
in the very expensive DII Data Center at National Life, likely for a hefty
monthly fee! I may still do a press release, and after talking to her will no
doubt have a draft for her to review on the Trantor web site shortly. Sarah has
been busy, I may stop by and see how things are tomorrow.
Maybe we can crank out a press release before much longer.
The hard part of trantor turns out to be:
1. Getting a State bureaucracy to recognize
Free Open Source Software (what's in it for them?)
Could there be some action here finally?
2. getting the visual bash trantor prototype complete, with
appropriate features, which is done.
3. Adding the new elements to the collection...
Sadly, not much has changed here. Sent David Zukerman a note about this, but I
am not getting involved with State Gumment...
Hopefully much of this can be discussed at the Christmas Party / Library
Open House.
EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES
Python - Particularly based upon my present task, we will be scheming (no pun
intended) to go (pun intended) forward with this somehow.
WATCHING OTHER MAKER SPACES
The conference let me do this, particularly the fantasitc Mint Maker space in
Rutland. We should get some kind of site going in support of the functioning
maker spaces in New England.
LOFTIER EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES
Blockchain Tic-Tac-Toe
part of the SHARE conference is to reconnect and somehow figure out how to code
the transactions. This will be attached to the tic-tac-toe.py game. We have
decided on using python 3 for the first cut which merely involves writing a
simple tic-tac-toe game. Now get thinking!

MAINFRAME ZLINUX AND REXTRY
Now that the Maker Faire is over I am going to get back to this.
We actually got copy of the VM program RexTry running on the zPDT. Now I need
to figure out how to turn it on. I am almost ready to focus on this again,
just got to debug some Visual Bash, then I can get at this.
I also have a line on curl for VM. This could be very cool.

- I fought the DREK and the DREK continues to win. Remember, What

away, or you let your friends or relatives use it. This is a cosmic
law. I am still fighting DREK. How to get over it? The secret
may be empty pellet bags. Is TechnoRubble organized DREK? Or is DREK
just what you get prior to something becoming TechnoRubble?
Just to let you know I am desperately trying to turn Drek into
TechnoRubble.

the time and resources to turn the Barre Open Systems Institute into more than
just the Adult Swim technical clinic and more into a real learning facility,
and figure out where our good chairs went. One direction we have been working
on is to begin thinking about classes. The curriculum that I am most interested
in is teaching documentation.
The goal of the meeting shall be as usual, to get organized and try to get the

Otherwise, Barre indeed remains a great venue for a Linux and Open Source
Software discussion and general system rejuvenation. Expect to be remotely
preached at on the various topics of Open Source and how I am confident it
shall cure all the evils and ills of this wicked world. In a perfect meeting,
people would come in, sit down, see the stuff we have been doing and hopefully
help us get the DIY stuff we are doing done, or maybe just fix a laptop.
So, do not forget that the Aldrich Barre library stocks "Linux Format", and the
latest issue is on the shelf, and it is good. The DVD's are available to
checkout and copy, we shall to continue provide copies and isos of each and
every one. I am continuing to duplicate about a years worth of DVD's which is
quite a task. You may want to watch this space for developments.
