Hey VAGUErs … I’m trying to get the word out about the National Day of Civic
Hacking. I had sent a not to VAGUE earlier, but realized now that I sent it
from an “unworthy” e-mail address and the listserv rejected it to a spam folder
I never check.

Here is the spiel! If you someone could post it to your local FPF, that would
be cool. I guess the point is, please share around! We still am looking for
more volunteers (always, really), and of course sponsors are nice.

On Saturday August 11th Code for BTV is celebrating the National Day of Civic
Hacking.
In doing so we are joining Code for America brigades from all around the
country.

Code for BTV is the Vermont-local brigade of Code for America.
It is our belief that efficient delivery of community services is a matter of
social justice.
It is one of our core goals to address injustice, caused by inefficient
delivery of community services, by volunteering to build efficient digital
equity for the government, non-profits, and civic organizations.
We build this equity with the modern tools, technology, and methodologies that
for reasons of budget, or bureaucracy, many of these organizations do not have
easy access to.

This year the theme for the event is "housing" in any way, shape, or form.

Code for BTV is teaming up with Erhard Manke of the Vermont Affordable Housing
Coalition (VAHC), and Leslie Black-Plumeau of the Vermont Housing Finance
Agency (VHFA) to tackle a number of immediate issues related to websites those
organizations manage.
Some more detail on the exact tasks is forthcoming.

However, we are putting out a call to all citizens in Vermont that want to help
strengthen the statewide housing services to come join us for our "hackathon."
The most important thing you can bring is a passion to help others and make a
positive change in our society. Aside from that, you may be wondering, "do I
have the skills needed to be useful at such an event?" Here is a list of the
sorts of skills we are looking for:
* project management help
* visual designers and artists
* story tellers and marketers
* writers and editors
* Wordpress nerds
* traditional web developers (HTML/JS/CSS)
* database gurus (especially MySQL)
* PHP nerds
* housing services knowledge beyond the experts we are bringing in

If you are interested in helping on this topic, please visit our MeetUp page
and sign-up for the event! This is important so we know how much free food to
beg for from the sponsors, and also if the space we have is big enough!

Food and drinks will be provided - although if anyone wants to sponsor the
event, please reach out to me.

Hope to see everyone there!
