Maybe you should use a Gtk mailing list for this kind of question, they have
more experience.

To answer your question, my personal favorite is the Mx toolkit (
http://live.gnome.org/Vala/MxSample), since it allows what you want and you
can include animations in a very easy and natural way. However, it does
require support for 3D graphics.
