Why do you put a . in front of valgrind ?
To my knowledge, this indicates that the shell has to "interpret" this "script".
But valgrind is an executable. So, I guess the shell obeys and tries to
interpret object code as a script, and reports a syntax error.

Does it work to just type:
  valgrind --leak-check=yes ./system/bin/testapp ?
