Arre Kiran, yeh bahut badhi dhamki hai. Don't ever be khamosh. Ok now..I will blow my trumpet (it doesn't mean that Sameer ever did, OK?). I dunno if you all know i have learnt Bharat Natyam for six years...so i never miss an opportunity to participate in a dance programme. This happened four years ago when I was working with TOI. There was a talent contest in the entire TOI and decided to do a dance number. I wanted a partner but my fellow male journos were all boring people. Luckily there was a trainee who was very enthu. I decided to team up with him and guess which song we decided to dance on? .... Nikamma kiya is dil ne...my journo colleagues were shocked. It was too much of a jhatka number for them. They are more classical oriented...they go to listen to Bhimsen Joshi! One senior woman was going to sing in French. But i have made no bones about my background and in fact I am proud of that. We took a friend who is an assistant of choereographer Ganesh Acharya. And he came up with such a lovely routine...we were telling a story through the song and it was hilarious.
My very uppity parsee (Bombay edition) editor (Columbia graduate, Malabar Hill bungalow resident) was also shocked. But one of the elim round judges was Economic Times Editor. He was blown away and came to us to congratulate us for our energy... it was a strong routine. On the day of the finals...most department heads came to cheer their staff...In our case, only my friends came...the editor or seniors were not planning to come. But the ET editor was chatting with TOI editor and he said how much he enjoyed our dance. Madam then decided to come to the event (in the same building!) and many others followed. The dance was a hit...for the finals Govinda, Rajshree and Sushma Reddy were the judges. We got first prize and our photos were published in Bombay Times. My editor who never spoke to me from her ivory tower chatted with me and was curious to know if the trainee and I were seeing each other!!! For the record, the answer was No. He was dating an intern. And guess what...a year later the ET editor became our (all India) TOI editor and by default, I was one of his favourites. In every meeting he brought the dance up. Cool na? Very long mail. But I had to give the sequence. Sorry if you were bored. Now everyone come up with their past time activities as Sameer suggested.
