Wherever you get it from, thank the invisible gene. I am also often mistaken for Mexican in Texas, or perhaps Spanish in London. There was one woman in the underground who spoke to me in Spanish and I told her you know English...?? She felt i knew Spanish but pretended not to know...cos she asked feel shy speaking SPanish?
My london neighbour a proper Sikhni, speaks to me only in Punjabi perhaps becos of my surname. When i reply to her in Hindi she goes," Punjabi nahin aandi??" I replied to her," Samajh aandi hai, bolan waaste nahin aandi." She smirked. I don't know if Punjabis think the entire India speaks their language. They are so smug about their Bollywood dominance and their universal pop songs. Forgive the generalisation....or fight back!
