Thanks for the feedback - I did build Varnish while logged in as root,
but I thought I also ran the test as root but will check, out of
curiosity should the compilation and install be done as root? And if
not which user should I be using?

You have a permission problem in your source tree.
Most likely you've built Varnish as root at some point, and now your
ordinary user can't access the built files.
