Hi, I've had the same issue, and I've hacked a few lines to add a "%D" flag (similar to Apache's) to varnishncsa in 3.0.3. See: https://gist.github.com/4175582
It seems to work, but please note that my C skills are fairly rusty and this has not been tested thoroughly yet, so I'm not quite ready to submit it to the -dev list. But you're welcome to give it a try and report any problems.
