FWIW: a lot of CMS can be configured to warn varnish that content has changed ( http://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v2.0/config-guide/varnish/config-varnish-magento.html )
In this case, the backend will issue HTTP requests to purge content, and of course, your VCL must be ready to treat them.
