Dears,

The route to COLOMBA village in Sanguem [close to SULCORNA-Quepem Farm School
of the Salesians of Don Bosco] is easy. Life in Colomba is not.

Move from Margao to Quepem town and then onwards to Adem, Fatorpa, Rivona and
Verla-Sulcorna junction before turning to Colamba and Cuprem. Drive carefully
after Quepem, the ore loaded trucks are the "Kings of the Road" here. there are
hundreds of them and one vehicle owner just cannot win an argument here. It
will take you about 45 minutes from Margao to reach Colomb village. Call Rama
Velip's residence on phone 0832-2602521 for directions to the exact venue of
the meeting. Most mobile phones systems have no or low coverage in Colomb,
though one can get the signal in Cuprem and Fatorpa. BSNL is the best service
provider in this area, land line and mobile.

If you can make it to Colomb on 05 June, it is the place to be. The local
deity is Shantadurga [or Sateri, the Earth Goddess worshipped as a Roen or
anthill] The villagers have reportedly spurned a donation of Rs15,000,000/-
[Rs.1.5 crore or 15 million] to the Sateri temple from just one mine owner to
have permission to operate the mine. If the Earth is permitted to be raped, to
what use is the worship of Mother Earth or Sateri? The financially poor Velips
and Gawdas have something in them that the urban midle class and the filthy
rich can learn from. Mere pas Ma hai, Dharti Ma ...not dirty mine!

Mining may be okay where it is in operation continuously over the last fifty
years. Even these require some environmental precautions and social
responsibility. New areas should not cater to a few families greed over the
entire populations need. If the Kushavati and other rivers in Sanguem and
Quepem area dry up ...Margao, Vasco and even Ponda and Panaji will die of
thirst. Water is piped to Margao and Vasco from here and transferred to the
Khanderpar river system to feed the Opa waterworks in summer. If the Mhadei is
dammed and damned by Karnataka, even Mapusa will need water from Sanguem. So
will the entire tourism belt from Betul to Vagator and the industrial estates
in Verna, etc. Mines do not affect only the Gawdas Kunbis, Velips and
Dhangars...the GAKUVED is fighting for us. Visit Mandd blogspot for updates.

  Mog asundi.

I would like to draw the attention of all persons part of this network
that this year's World Environment Day function on June 5th has been,
by unanimous choice, been shifted to Colomba, Rivona, south Goa. The public
meeting will commence at 10.00 am. This is a great opportunity for all those
concerned about the environment and about the destructive mining activities of
Goan mining companies (legal and
illegal) to show their solidarity with villagers in mining areas who
stand to lose life and livelihood. Colomba village will be completely
extinguished if the 23 mines allowed by the Portuguese in the village
are allowed to operate. Some have already started operations. The
Government of aam aadmi is fully supporting the mining companies.

Please therefore decide to attend in significant numbers. Come down to Margao,
then move to Quepem. From there Colomba village is a short distance.
